Getting Your Home Guest-Ready for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and with company coming, you want your home to feel welcoming, relaxed, and, most importantly, ready for the fun rather than frazzled. Whether you’re hosting family, friends, or both, a little advance holiday prep can make a huge difference.
Here are easy, doable steps you can follow to get your house looking great and your mindset calm. (And don’t forget: there’s a handy cleaning printable at the end to keep you on track.)

Start with the Big Picture
Before diving into chores, take a minute to think about how you want your space to feel. Do you want cozy and casual? Formal and polished? Knowing this will help you set the tone and prioritize what matters most.
- Walk through each room and ask: “What’s one thing here that will make guests feel comfortable?”
- Decide which areas will see the most foot traffic (living room, dining area, kitchen) and focus there.

Clear the Clutter & Create Space
Clutter = visual stress. Clearing it early means your home breathes and your cleaning is easier.
- Go room by room and remove any items that don’t belong (extra toys, stacks of mail, personal paperwork).
- In dining and living spaces, make sure chairs are accessible and there’s space for guests to put on coats, store bags, or set down drinks.
- Set up a basket or shelf by the door for guest belongings.
Focus on the Surfaces That Matter
You don’t have to scrub every corner to feel ready. Just aim for the surfaces folks will touch or see.
- Tables, countertops, and coffee tables: wipe down and clear off non‐essentials.
- Kitchen surfaces: put away small appliances or clutter to keep counters clean and open.
- Floors: vacuum or sweep the main areas; consider a quick mop if you expect heavy foot traffic or if the weather’s messy.
Make the Bathroom Guest-Friendly
Bathrooms often feel forgotten until the last minute, but a welcoming bathroom makes a super impression.
Would you like to save this?
- Fresh hand towels (and maybe a backup on hand).
- A clean mirror and sink (no toothpaste splatter).
- Extra toilet paper, and maybe a small trash bag under the sink that’s ready to go.
- A little scent or freshness—think a candle or plug‐in (just nothing overpowering).
Set the Ambience
Once the essentials are taken care of, you can add touches that make your home feel warm and inviting.
- Soft lighting: Use lamps or dim overhead lights if possible.
- Seasonal décor: a simple centerpiece, a small wreath, or fall accents go a long way.
- Music: have a light playlist ready. It sets the tone and fills in the background silence.
- Cozy up seats: make sure guests have somewhere comfortable to sit, with pillows or throws if it’s chilly.
Kitchen Prep for Flow
Since the kitchen often becomes the hub of the gathering, prepping it ahead helps you stay on top of things.
- Clear counter space for food prep and serving.
- Have containers or platters cleaned and ready for leftovers.
- Set aside a small trash or recycling bin near the prep zone so disposal is easy.
- Think about guest traffic in the kitchen and remove any obstacles (like chairs or bags) to keep it safe and smooth.

Plan a Quick Clean Just Before Guests Arrive
Even if you did a full clean earlier, a quick “final pass” makes things shine.
- Walk through your main areas 30–60 minutes before arrival: fluff pillows, fold throws, wipe smudges, open a window for fresh air.
- Remove impulse items like kids’ projects or misplaced shoes/socks left out in the rush.
- Make sure trash bins are emptied, and that dining and living zones are visible and inviting.

I like your tips. This week we are finishing up a room renovation for guests to arrive and I just packed up two huge boxes of Christmas decorations to participate in a hospital fundraiser – so my house is a mess! I needed these tips to quickly transform my house from clutter and chaos to welcoming and calm. Thanks for sharing and this post will be a feature this week. #HomeMattersParty
