Nativity Sequencing: Preschool Christmas Activity

Sharing is caring!

The Christmas story is full of meaningful moments, and preschoolers learn it best through play. Nativity sequencing turns story time into an interactive experience they can retell on their own.

This simple, hands-on activity helps preschoolers understand the Christmas story by retelling it in order, using play, repetition, and conversation.

What You Do

Read the Christmas Story Together

Start by reading the story from your chosen Bible or book. Take your time and keep it relaxed. As you read, point to the pictures and ask simple questions like,
“Who is this?” or “What are they doing?”

This helps your child connect names, characters, and events.

Retell the Story Using Puppets or Figures

After reading, retell the story yourself using the puppets or nativity figures. Move slowly and pause often. Every few moments, ask,
“What happened next?”

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later! You'll also get regular recipes & printables to your inbox!

If your child isn’t sure, flip back through the book together and find the answer in a fun, low-pressure way.

Let Your Child Take the Lead

Once the story is finished, hand the figures over and say,
“It’s your turn!”

Get them started with a simple prompt like,
“A long time ago, Mary and Joseph were traveling…”

From there, let them tell the story in their own words. The order doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters is that they’re thinking about sequence, characters, and meaning.

Why This Activity Works

Nativity sequencing builds early storytelling skills, strengthens memory, and reinforces the true meaning of Christmas in a way that feels natural and fun. Best of all, it invites conversation, imagination, and connection during a busy season.

This is an activity you can repeat throughout the month, with the story growing richer each time your child tells it.

More Christmas Fun for Kids

Nativity sequencing is a simple but meaningful way to slow down and focus on the heart of the Christmas story with your preschooler. By reading, retelling, and playing it out together, children begin to understand not just who the characters are, but how the story unfolds.

It builds confidence, listening skills, and early storytelling skills while creating a calm, connected moment during a busy season. It turns the Christmas story into something your child can hold, move, and remember long after the activity is over.
