Christmas Tree Letter Review (Fun Holiday Alphabet Activity for Kids)

Sharing is caring!

Looking for a simple, hands-on way to practice letter recognition with your preschooler or early learner this holiday season? This Christmas Tree Letter activity is a great blend of festive fun and early literacy practice — and most of the supplies are things you probably already have at home.

Add this to your list of Christmas activities and ideas for the kids. They’ll have a blast!

Why This Works

Children learn best when play and education are combined — and holiday themes are especially engaging! Using a Christmas tree motif makes literacy practice feel like a game instead of a lesson.

Plus, this activity can easily be turned into other letter practice games — for example:

  • Uppercase–lowercase matching sets (like the printable games many early learning sites offer)
  • Sensory bags or trays with letters hidden in “ornaments” (great for tactile learners)
  • Alphabet sorting activities where kids put letters on the matching tree mat

How to Make the Christmas Tree Letter Activity

1. Draw Your Tree

On a piece of paper or poster board, roughly sketch a Christmas tree shape. Big and simple is perfect!

2. Create “Ornaments”

Write one letter per bottle cap (or sticker/button) — mix uppercase and lowercase if you want kids to match them later.

💡 Tip: If you plan to use this activity every season, laminate the tree and add velcro dots for easy placement and removal.

How to Play

You can adapt the play to your child’s level:

Simple Letter Match

  • Parent calls out a letter (e.g., “Find A!”)
  • Child finds the matching ornament and places it on the tree

Child-Led

Let your child choose and name letters first, then place them.

Bonus Phonics Round

Once your child knows their letters, have them say a word that starts with that letter after matching it.

Extra Ideas for Parents

Here are a few ways to keep the learning going all season:

Make it reusable — laminate pieces and store in a learning bin
Turn it into a scavenger hunt — hide letter ornaments around the room
Add writing practice — have kids write each letter after they match it

This Christmas Tree Letter activity is an easy, festive way to help young children review their letters and sounds during the holiday season. It’s flexible, hands-on, and can be as simple or advanced as your child’s skill level. Fun learning + holiday spirit = parent win!
