After cutting out the mermaids, stick them on popsicle sticks to make underwater puppets. Grab a blue sheet for your “ocean,” and let your child make up stories! This activity turns cutting practice into a playtime that boosts imagination.
Ask questions like “Where is your mermaid going?” or “Who might she meet in the deep ocean?” This helps kids talk more and use bigger words!
The puppet play also helps them process the cutting task they’ve just completed, creating a meaningful connection to their work.

Ocean in a Bottle
Again, once your child cuts out the mermaids, cover them with clear contact paper or laminate them, then help make an “ocean in a bottle”.
Fill a clear plastic bottle with water, add blue food coloring, and add baby oil. Slip a few small cut-out mermaids inside, and seal the lid tight!
When kids shake the bottle, they make waves and currents that make their mermaids “swim” through the blue water. Kids learn about oil and water (how they don’t mix while creating a beautiful deep-sea effect) while watching their hand-cut mermaids float through the waves they make with each shake!
Mermaid Memory Match Game
For this activity, have your child cut out two copies of each mermaid. Then, flip them over and play a memory-matching game! This adds a cognitive challenge after the cutting practice.
Kids LOVE playing games with things they made themselves! This memory game helps them notice details as they match the mermaid faces and poses. Depending on your child’s age, you can use fewer or more cards.
