West Virginia State Facts
Fact One: The first rural free mail delivery started here.
One historical fact about West Virginia is that it was the first in the U.S. to test rural free mail delivery. Before that, people in the countryside had to travel into town to pick up their mail. However, in 1896, the first rural free delivery (RFD) route began in Charles Town, West Virginia.
This test was a big success and helped change how mail was delivered nationwide, making life easier for rural families.

It’s the only day of the year you’re allowed to walk across the bridge—and it’s one of the most exciting events in the state!
