5 Smart Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe During the Holidays
The holidays bring so much joy, excitement, and activity into our home, but for pets, that same hustle can introduce unexpected dangers. From decor to dinner tables, there are many seasonal hazards our furry family members can accidentally encounter. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping them safe, happy, and relaxed during the busiest time of year.
Below are five tips every pet owner can use to protect their animals throughout the holiday season.

Keep Holiday Décor Secure and Out of Reach
Holiday decorations are beautiful, but they can be irresistible to curious pets. A wiggling tail or playful paw can quickly turn festive decor into a safety hazard.
- Secure Christmas trees with a sturdy base or wall anchor so they don’t tip if climbed or bumped.
- Place breakable ornaments, tinsel, garlands, and ribbon high enough that pets can’t reach them.
- Tape down or hide extension cords and light strings to prevent chewing.
- Keep candles, wax warmers, and open flames out of pet traffic areas.
A good rule of thumb: if it jingles, wiggles, or sparkles, assume your pet will want it—and plan accordingly.

Be Careful With Holiday Foods and Treats
Holiday tables overflow with delicious dishes, but many traditional foods are risky (or downright dangerous) for pets.
Avoid giving pets:
- Chocolate and candy
- Grapes and raisins
- Anything containing onions or garlic
- Turkey skin, bones, and greasy leftovers
- Alcohol, eggnog, and holiday drinks
- Cookies or desserts with artificial sweeteners like xylitol
If you want your pet to enjoy a special treat, stick to pet-safe snacks or offer a small amount of plain cooked meat or vegetables approved by your vet.
Watch Out for Toxic Holiday Plants
Festive greenery can brighten a room, but some popular holiday plants pose a risk of poisoning if chewed or swallowed.
Plants to keep out of pet zones include:
- Poinsettias
- Mistletoe
- Holly
- Lily bouquets (especially dangerous to cats)
- Real Christmas trees with treated water
Would you like to save this?
Opting for faux plants or placing greenery in areas pets can’t access is the easiest way to keep them safe.

Create a Quiet Retreat Away From the Noise
Visitors, doorbells, parties, and new sounds can be overwhelming for some pets. Even confident animals can experience stress when routines change.
A “holiday safe space” helps pets decompress. Try setting up:
- A quiet room or cozy corner
- Their bed or crate
- Fresh water and a comfort toy
- A soft blanket or familiar scent
Let guests know this space is off-limits. This little hideaway can make a big difference during gatherings or loud celebrations.
Protect Pets From Doors, Trash, and Escapes
Extra foot traffic means pets have more chances to slip outside without anyone noticing. The smell of holiday cooking and trash can also tempt them into mischief.
Keep your home secure by:
- Monitoring doors when guests enter or exit
- Using baby gates to create safe boundaries
- Ensuring pets wear updated ID tags
- Keeping trash cans closed and food waste out of reach
- Double-checking yard gates before letting pets outside
A few seconds of awareness can prevent holiday heartbreak.
