Is canned pumpkin the same as pumpkin puree?
Yes — canned pumpkin is pumpkin puree (most of the time). When you buy a can labeled pumpkin or 100% pure pumpkin, it’s cooked, pureed pumpkin with no added sugar or spices.
The only exception is pumpkin pie filling (or pumpkin pie mix), which comes pre-sweetened and spiced — that’s not the same as plain pumpkin puree.
So if a recipe calls for pumpkin puree, the regular can of 100% pure pumpkin is exactly what you want.

What is a substitute for pumpkin?
Great question! If you don’t have pumpkin on hand, you’ve got plenty of tasty stand-ins. Here are the best substitutes for pumpkin puree:
- Butternut squash – The closest match in flavor and texture. Roast, steam, or use canned butternut squash puree.
- Sweet potato – Naturally sweet, creamy, and a perfect swap in both sweet and savory dishes.
- Acorn squash – Mild and slightly nutty, good for soups, bakes, and side dishes.
- Carrot puree – A little sweeter, but works well in baked goods.
- Kabocha squash – Dense and rich, almost identical to pumpkin in many recipes.
Ratio tip: Use the same amount (1:1 swap) for pumpkin in recipes.
